Home Insurance from Budget

In March we received renewal papers for our home insurance with Budget, we had decided not to go with them so did not send them off. We instead went with churchill. Since May this year they have been taking at least £35 from our account.
Should we have got in contact with budget? I am positive we did speak to them as I am sure they said they could not match the quote. I have no paper work from them as in a mad clear out my hubby shredded everything.
Will I be able to claim this money back or have I made a boo boo?

well going from my experience you wont even have got an insurance cert either, we are with budget and we had to chase them to get the document, which was emailed to me, not sent!!0

Your right we have no certifcate or any letter saying that we had renewed.
When we first took out the insurance we had papers sent and a booklet informing us if what we were covered for.Keep smiling, it makes people wonder what you're up to.0 -
When budget sent the renewal notice through that told you what to do next if you do or do not want to renew, what did you do?
With budget, you need to ring them up to tell them you are not renewing. Did you do this?Your right we have no certifcate or any letter saying that we had renewed.
You dont need to as the renewal notice covers that. Home insurance isnt like motor insurance. You dont get a certificate of insurance in the same way. Will I be able to claim this money back or have I made a boo boo?
at the moment you have what is known as "dual insurance". You need to contact both providers and let them know this and tell them which one you want to continue. Then between them they will decide how much you should be refunded and who will pay it (i.e. do they split the cost between them). You may also suffer a cancellation charge.I am an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA). The comments I make are just my opinion and are for discussion purposes only. thanks for the replies.
I have no problem with the cancellation fee, as it would seem we are at fault. I logged into my account with them (which I had forgotten we could do) and it says at the end of the policy schedule that we must inform them that we no longer wanted the insurance. I dont remember seeing this when we first took out the policy and I am pretty certain that it wasn't on the renewal forms.
However, hubby rang them today and they said if we send them a copy of the insurance scehdule we have with churchill then they will refund every penny.Keep smiling, it makes people wonder what you're up to.0
