Electric meter...

Were having a new electric meter fitted soon, just wondering where they most likely fit them? And will they need to go into every room to check the sockets and stuff?

Thanks!

My old spinny-wheel meter was changed last week and the new meter was a straight swap for the old one. The fitter just popped the main fuse, took a note of the old/new meter reading, removed the old meter, fitted the new and covered everything in lots of security ties. Took about 30 minutes and there wasn't any other testing going on.

Most likely in exactly the same place as the old one. And no, they will not check your domestic wiring beyond the meter, that is entirely your own responsibility and nothing to do with the DNO.

When I had my meter changed recently they plugged a tester into a socket to check the Live - Neutral were around the right way - and again when the meter change was complete.

There are several checks done whilst changing meters, most are carried out at the meter point for the safetey of the engineer, if they arn't done then thats his/her lookout as they'll be the ones getting a belt.

The only check on the customers side is the polarity on one or two sockets, this is done before and after the job and takes a few seconds, normally the nearest socket to the meter is used....a very important check as there are serious safetey issues if the polarity is reversed. The DNO fuse will be checked and you may get a comment on any iffy wiring seen, if part of the meter wiring it should be replaced, if it is beyond the meter it is your responsibility to get it sorted.
