Ryanair & claiming for damaged suitcase ??

has anyone any experience of claiming through Ryanair for a damaged suitcase

we have just (Thur.29.Jul) arrived back from Majorca on a Ryanair flight
upon on arrival at Liverpool JL airport, one of our suitcases was damaged, to the point that the handle was totally hanging off, 1 fixing was missing.
we went to the desk at the airport terminal to report this, was then semi fobbed off saying its not our fault etc (after a long day, just wanted to get home) anyhow I was advised to get the suitcase fixed then claim on my travel insurance
I queried this, firstly where do you get a suitcase fixed ?????
also when claiming on travel insurance you usually lose the first £50 in excess etc
I have been given a damage report, and a piece of paper with a list of details etc, one of the details mentions claiming to Ryanair

now my query is has any one had any experience with this sort of this

a number of year ago we had a suitcase wrecked upon our return to Manchester airport, again we got a similar form, however we were informed someone would phone us within 24-36 hours, was not fobbed off in any way, next thing we gets a phone call, goes through a number of details, some 24/48 hours later we had a new replacement suitcase delivered

although this was about 4-5 years ago, this was without having to go through any travel insurance, hence the query

any help or advice would be appreciated, thanks

There is a page on ryanair's website (sorry can't post a link)

The way this is worded I wouldn't hold out much hope. There is a line that says

"you should know that Ryanair's liability for loss, delay or damage to baggage is limited under the Montreal Convention unless a higher value is declared in advance to us and additional charges paid."

This reads to me that unless you declared your suitcase to them and said it was worth a lot of money and paid a charge they don't have to reimburse you?

I haven't tried to clain from Ryan air myself so I may be wrong, hope someone is along soon with a positive story

You cam claim direct to Ryanair, all the information is on their own website:

What do I do if my baggage is delayed or damaged?
    http://www.ryanair.com/en/questions/what-do-i-do-if-my-baggage-is-delayed-or-damaged

    and

What do I do if I need to make a baggage claim?
    http://www.ryanair.com/en/questions/what-do-i-do-if-i-need-to-make-a-baggage-claim

Note, you must claim within 7 days. I assume the paper you have from the airport is a Baggage Irregularity Report with a reference number, so you can continue your claim online?

I tried to claim for a brand new bag that was ripped open on its second flight mere days after being purchased even though it had survived its first flight with another the previous day unscathed.

We got fobbed off even though we had receipts to prove how new it was and sent scans to Ryanair. What made it worse was that we had been moved onto 2 flights the day after we were supposed to fly because our original single flight had been cancelled (still don't know why) and we now had to change in Frankfurt-Hahn and wait 6 hours for our flight home. It was when we got to Frankfurt-Hahn and picked up our bags that we realised that the damage had been done so had to tape up the bag for the next flight. Assistance at the airport was minimal and to add insult to injury they tried to charge us for our bags again because we were now flying on 2 seperate flights instead of 1 because Ryanair cancelled the first! [/rant]

As already mentioned you need to get back to them within 7 days and by fax otherwise they won't even consider it so Good Luck!
