New Acer can't connect to internet - help please

Hi,
We've got a new Acer 2410 and I can't get it connected to the internet via my existing Dial up server.
I've put in the ISP details etc . But, when trying to connect I get the message " no dialling tone"
The device manager lists the modem as 'SoftV90 DataFaxModem with SmartCP" and confirms this device is working properly.
When doing the troubleshoot links I get to the advice 'double click on Ports(Com & LPT) in device manager'. But, there are no Ports listed in the hardware at the device manager.
I also looked at the installed Acer help , system configuration. This also states " Serial Port - not available" "Parallel Port - not available"
Have we got something missing from the computer?
Please tell me whether I need to return the computer to Currys or can I somehow 'wake the ports into life'?
All advice and assistance on 'how to connect' appreciated - thanks

Are you using the cable that came with it, and plugging it into the modem port, (not the ethernet port).Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0

Machine not supplied with a lead.
Using a new lead and it's plugged into Modem(RJ-11)port. Just checked to make sure
The adjacent Ethernet (RJ-45) looks a slightly bigger port?

Not all leads are wired the same, which is why I suggested using the one that is supplied. Are you sure you didn't get one with it, it's unusual..
I have seen people plug it into the ethernet port before, so just wanted to rule that out first.
You could try using start, run, dialer to phone a mobile, to see if the modem is working.Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0 -
Hi Albert,
Thanks for your guidance.
Acer didn't provide a cable but I've searched around my old stuff and plugged in some old cables and guess what - it now works using an old modem cable
Must have been an incompatible cable I was trying .

Mine came with cables but using my Acer 2410 via a wireless router I purchased from PC World

I recently bought an Acer for hubby, which came with a lead but I couldn't get a dial up connection with, changed to old lead after a few hours & like you got connection, too.0
