Paperback birch
Hi, I am a complete novice here, and would like some advice regards paperbark birch...is it possible to restrict the growth of their roots, by perhaps planting in a 65 ltr pot into the ground?...I really like these trees but have only a small long strip of grass beside my drive, and am concerned they will damage not only the drive, but foundations of my neighbours wall on the other side.. I don't mind if they only grow up to approx 10 to 15 ft...wish to know before I do anything...any advice appreciated...thanks

Sorry I don't know the answer, but you could try Barcham's Trees http://www.barcham.co.uk/home who seem to know everything about trees and offer an advice service. Good luck.0

I don't see why you shouldn't do it although you will have to be careful with the watering or the tree will suffer.
There's some knowledgeable people on https://www.gardenlaw.co.uk
I'm sure some of them will be able to help.0 -
YOu can get root control bags to restrict the growth of the tree and keep the roots where you want them. Better than a pot.
For example: http://www.gardenselect.co.uk/rootex.html
(the result of a Google, not a recommendation).
But I agree-a specialist nursery would probably be the best place for advice.import this0 -
Hi
yes you can grow most trees in a root-control bag.
2 things though to be aware of-
-the tree will need constantly staked
-you will have to provide all nutrients and somewater.
Agree Barcham trees or try James Coles retail side - they are a huge wholesale/retail nursery that use these air-pruning growing methods for some of they're trees and may be able to sell you a bag as well as advise.Greyer by the minute - Older by the hour - Wiser by the day0
