Hi,
I'm going off to uni soon so im trying to hold on to my money but i want to know if i'm reaching with the following idea:
When buying my laptop i was told that by paying £25 for a freeview tv output i would have to buy a tv licence. The exceptions in the tv licence rules are if 'your TV is powered by internal batteries', doesnt that include laptops? An example they use is pocket-sized tv so if you think about it isnt mine a lap-sized tv?
The sales assistant at Staples seemed to agree but i dont think i can risk a fine on a fellow student. It seems above board to me though..

No, if you read where this is stated, it's regarding an additional license. You don't need an additional license for a battery operated tv, or one that you take travelling for example.
You do however need an existing license. The laptop, and mobile tv etc... are then covered under this home license, even when you take them out."Boonowa tweepi, ha, ha."0 -

And more specifically, regarding the laptop:
http://www.tvlicensing.co.uk/information/secondhome.jsp
It applies to a second home, so assumes you already have a "first" home license, and uses the wording "If you only use a TV set powered by its own internal batteries, you do not need a separate TV Licence.""Boonowa tweepi, ha, ha."0
