Trees to create privacy?
Can anyone give me any ideas on planting bare-root trees in the Autumn time that would grow tall (or could buy tall/fledged) that would be perfect for creating privacy??
And the most economical and cheap?
We have just had a load of Llandii taken down that have grown tall, which blocked out the house overlooking our garden (at the end) for privacy and also now let the light into our garden
We are now looking for something similar (not so thick as Llandii) that would create privacy but also block the windows that now seem to be peering into our garden and back of the house!
Would tree's like Ash be ok? do they grow tall for privacy?
Thanks for any advice

Was going to point out that Velvet are doing an offer where you could claim a free tree (including delivery), of either Rowan, Scots Pine or Silver Birch, but, now that I've checked, the offer ended yesterday. D'oh.0

I would go for a cotoneaster tree. They grow to a decent height, are evergreen and have berries as well.
A garden designer friend recommended it for giving privacy without really annoying neighbours. Won't need trimming either.
I bought a decent size one bare rooted 2 years ago and it is 7-9ft now. Very nice!I have never been able to find out precisely what feminism is: I only know that people call me a feminist whenever I express sentiments that differentiate me from a doormat - Rebecca West

Are the windows you want to screen upstairs or downstairs? That makes the difference between planting shrubs like cotoneasters or trees. Do you want evergreen or would deciduous give you enough of a screen? How many metres could you spare in the garden for it to spread?0

I'd just enjoy being able to talk and have a neighbourly relationship with the guys next door and forget about erecting barriers.
...unless mrs buckman is thinking of getting her kit off!0 -
She's always getting her kit off! and me too for that matter!:o
The windows on the end house are large and upstairs so they have to be quite large to block out numerous windows now looking into our garden!
Evergreen I suppose would be the best bet, and less hassle/need less trimming?0 -
Hi
Mojisola is right can you let us know that info - matured height and spread allowable?
Trimming a 50 foot Ash is not an option I think :rotfl:Greyer by the minute - Older by the hour - Wiser by the day0 -
Hi, we are in UK Nottingham, and the problem is a guest house/come hotel at the bottom of our garden which was always screened off (with Leylandii)
So they are quite large upstairs windows now looking into our garden..
Not too sure of height as not there at the moment.. but would consider anything..Evergreen??0 -
How about Silver Birch?
I have been told these grow tall, fan out to create privacy and would do the job?
Anyone know the best place to get these from, bare root?0 -
I bought a mixture of bare root trees and bushes and planted them just before Christmas, they've all started to grow well. Some are only a couple of feet tall but others are four foot or more. There's lots of information on this site and i'd recommend them.
