We've just had a quote of between £800 and £1200 for painting the hall, stairs and landing plus 8 doors. The cost is dependant on the state of the walls as we have some loose plaster.
  • Unless you are in an expensive area i would expect to be paying around £100 per day plus materials for a general person but upto £200 if they are fully trained etc. Remember it is a relatively unskilled job compared to the mandatory training of regulated trades such as electrical and gas fitting which costs around £200+ per day.
    Cash ISA rate 6.5% fixed for 2 years. Mortgage rate 0.75% = 5.75% profit on £75K = £4500 per year:j

Sorry OP on hijacking ya thread but i assume it would only take about 1-2 hours to wallpaper one wall? so would i still be looking at £100+

In a normal situation if a decorator was papering the whole room, and just the papering, he would probably charge per roll to hang it.
In your situation, it would be difficult to judge as you only want one wall done, but he would still have to come over, set up etc, and then paper the wall, so you at least have to a half days wages, but I am not too sure, I am a decorator, and even I wouldnt know how much to charge you unless I saw the quality of the paper, pattern match, and what your walls are like.

    To mrstittlemouse,
Regarding your HSL, it is difficult to judge unless seen, its okay you doing the prep etc, but painters like doing thier own prep, as no offence meant, but when a client trys and odes thier own prep prior to me coming in, I have to go behind them and re-do some filling, or they have missed bits, and I have spent time going over what they have done.

Depends again on what type of paper you are putting up, is it lining or embossed, what make paint you use, how big it is, it is very difficult unless seen.

But the average is depending on area anything from £90-150 per day, I never charge per day, I charge per job, if it takes me 3 days or 30 days thats not your problem its still the price I quoted you.
But loads of painters charge per day, and it all varies, best thing to do is to get a few quote, and take it from there.
  • We have recently had a quote for hall stairs landing, wallpapering all , painting ballustrade skirting boards and 5 doors £300 cash....I have to strip the walls and provide paper. Waiting on another quote which I think will be quite a bit more as the man seemed more professional.
    £900 towards next holiday...ta very much Mr T x

we've just paid £220 for 2 days work - this was to remove wallpaper from the ceilings in the bedroom, lounge and hallway. Remove coving from the lounge and remove wallpaper on the hall walls. I'm normally very happy to do my own stuff but didn't want to tackle taking the paper off the ceilings

that's what our decoratord did. He came around, sized up all the work that needed doing and quoted us £220 for the lot.

Jenny, you got a result there with the amount they charged for the stripping, Hang on to him lol .

Tiger, again I think you you got a result as well, at £300 I would bite his hand off lol, but the test is how good is his papering, as you must start at the longest drop first, that is usually by the bulk wall, (the wall you see when you walk down the stairs.) that can be a nightmare, and can take anything up to an hours to get it plumbed right, cause you cant mess that one up, as all your lengths follow from that.
Ask for a reference regarding his papering though, cause that is the important bit, cause if he messes up, you will either have to have it re-done or live with it.
See what the other quote says, I think you will find he will be a fair bit more expensive.
