I am hoping to go skiing with a group of friends some time in Fenruary. We want to do it as cheaply as possible so would like to avoid a package deal if possible.
Is it possible to get ski transfers from either Geneva or Milan Bergamo with independent companies that don't cost a fortune?

What do you mean, "ski transfer"? The Swiss railway system is impressive, and serves virtually the entire country. Just check that your resort has a railway station.
Bergamo is a proper town (and fantastically beautiful as well) and it certainly has its own public transport links.0 -

By ski transfer I mean that I would ideally like a bus from the airport to the resort.0 -
Geneva Airport has it's own train & bus connections to various French Ski resorts like Chamonix.
Don't know if you have to use the French exit from the airport though0
