Being penalised on insurance for a theft ... please read more

Hi ,

Wonder if anyone could possibly point me in the right direction .

Basically OH had a 20 yr old Bedford Rascal van (not alarmed) and in Jan 2010 (during the snow) he came home from work and discovered it had been stolen . He was using his Subaru Impreza as its a 4 wheel drive and safer during that weather .

Now we were paid out £350 for the Rascal , bought another van and have insured that with Direct Line on the same policy so thats all sorted .

The Subaru Impreza is now up for renewal so we got the renewal quote through from LV for £313 fully comp me & OH . So I rang them up and said about the van and he said we had to declare it as the claim was in OH names .

So gave him all the details and he said right your premium is now £420 . But the thing is the Subaru is going nowhere , it has a mutts nutts alarm/immobiliser on it , we have owned it for 4 years now and it has never been looked at let alone taken so I feel its a little unfair when the stolen motor was a 20 yr old heap basically and on a totally seperate insurance policy as well which we have obviously lost NCB on and are now paying extra premium on that .

I don't suppose there is anything I can do about it but just wondered if anyone knew if there was anything else we could do .

Hope this makes sense

Thanks
Baby Thomas born 3 months early by emergency section on 21/1/09 weighing 1lb 15ozs .
Thomas came home after 3 months and 2 days in hospital weighing 5lb 15ozs
Thomas weighed 21lb 4ozs on his 1st birthday , a total weight gain of 18lbs 5ozs !

Unfortunately Imprezas are highly desirable vehicles for thieves (especially WRX's). Despite all the security features they still get nicked pretty often. Knowing that you have had a recent vehicle theft at your home address will clearly increase the risk, especially given the type of car you have.

Further to Raskazz's post, Insurance premiums have gone up for everyone in the last year even if you have no claims

I see what you are saying but maybe I didn't get my point across very well , basically we have already been penalised on the van's insurance already , lost NCB and premium there has gone up , fair enough , can stomach that one but not the Impreza , why should our insurance go up on a vehicle that has never had a claim on it in the entire while we have owned the car . Each of our 4 vehicles has its own separate insurance policy .

Our premium hasn't really changed (give or take literally £5 either way) for the last 4 years , we paid £308 last year and was quoted £313 this year for it .

Just don't think it is very fair to be penalised on the Impreza , I mean no one even took the Impreza when we went to Turkey for 3 weeks and divvy OH forgot to lock it !

As your othere vehicle was stolen outside the house they will class this as a high risk when calculating your premiums and especially as the Impreza is a desirable car. Another thing insurance is going up for alot of people regardless of claims so this will also account for some of the increase.
