  • Regarind who you can report it to isn't Ogfem actually looking for people to report this sort of thing at the moment? I know I know its wierd to think of them actually doing something but its worth a go. Anyone have the contact info?

The stuff about profits going abroad has a grain of truth. Certain companies (most of te big 6 I believe) are foreign owned. Take for example NPower they will have German shareholders, I believe they employ something like 14500 people here, so they are clearly contributing something.

Also anyone who reads the new knows the uk needs large sums spent here to keep the lights on. It is a concern, I suppose, that various governments don't seem to have any urgency on this issue, and also a concern that britain must be really bad at business if home grown companies keep disappearing!

Does anyone else think its worth having a thread with a title something like whoppers told by door to door utility salesmen? (IMO it is usually men, we must be more dis-honest, or depserate for jobs perhaps?)

    Complete garbage.

Npower are owner by RWE which is a German company.

However, they were owned by Innogy before anyway. They didn't remain British owned for very logn after de-reg.

Load of rubbish, no such think as this. Just another commission grabbing sales agent!

Did he run down your steps when you mentioned you knew about MSE???

Ofgem is calling on consumers to provide information if they have had concerns when being sold energy contracts over the phone or face-to-face.

You can do so by calling the Consumer Direct hotline on 08454 04 05 06 (when dialling this number customers should choose option 1). The information will be passed on to Ofgem which will review it in the light of new obligations on energy suppliers to proactively prevent misleading and unfair marketing practices by sales agents.

I think thats probably just because its a job where men are in the majority.

That said, the only time I have heard of a female door knocker was at my mums, the saleswoman was from BG and still came out with the usual old crap (lowering direct debits without knowing usage, them supplying the gas to the current supplier etc...) maybe not such big whoppers, but certainly BS

I agree with Plushchris, it's just because there are more men in the job.

I have only ever had one saleswoman knock at my door, and she was selling Sky.

After learning that I had a landline, broadband and a Tv she insisted I would save money if I switched to sky for them all.

I asked how much Sky cost and she wouldn't tell me, she kept insisting I tell her how much I was paying and she would tell me how much I would save by switching.

I stuck to my guns and insisted she tell me how much Sky cost, so I could compare that price with what I was paying. She wouldn't tell me, and eventually just walked away.

She may have been a woman, but she was from the same school as all the men.

"Find out how much they are paying now, estimate about 10% of that and tell them that's how much they will save if they switch. Who wouldn't switch to save that? Out you go girl, knock on doors and and do that and you'll make a fortune in commission".

Worth a sticky really, the same issues keep coming up over the years on MSE.

Besr thing would be for someone, somewhere to have a table on a webpage with a list of the BS these agents come out with so consumers can check if they are getting it.

Don't depend on Ofgem, this issue (and the things on MSE) have been going on for over 8 years to my knowledge. Ofgem do very little. Consumer awareness would be best so people can blast these BS artists.

I know a lot about the utility market luckily so I tend to give them a very very hard time on my doorstep!

The "nice man" in M&S bit off a bit more than he could chew approaching me yesterday too after I heard him telling an elderly couple "YES! we will definately be cheaper for you"

Indeed. But for an OAP, Lady Gaga looks quite good.

  • Southern Electric are at it again. A "District Manager" informed me that I was one of the unlucky people in the street who was not on their tariff, even though they supply the power, not EDF or British Gas.

I find that pulling the mobile phone out and saying " You do not mind if I record this conversation do you ? Please identify yourself for the recording ! " usually sends them running !
