Just moved into a new house and it has prepayment meters. I actually went through the comparison sites and chose a fixed deal with eon. I gave them all my meter numbers online, and they sent me through a welcome letter telling me i was being switched to the correct deal.

Then i got a prepayment key through the door.

Aparrently they couldnt tell from the meter numbers that they are prepayment so just changed my tarrif for me. If i want to change to direct debit they charge £50 per meter. Oh, and the fixed tarrif i signed up for is no longer available.

Anyone know which companies dont charge for a meter change?

Ta much.

Just call them up and see what you can negotiate ;)

Remember that those who don't charge must be covering the price another way i.e. by increasing their supply cost. You'll need to do the calculations yourself and decide the best deal (which might mean switching again after you get the meter changed). Use a comparison site to help you.

Perhaps you could get some cashback to cover the cost of changing the meter? Check out the cashback sites.

    Hi ahmyerda

I'm sorry you went through all the switching functions only to be told you couldn't have the tariff you wanted.

Just to confirm, whilst customers with Prepayment Meters can register with our website, they are not eligible for an online tariff.

As you say, to switch to a credit meter we charge £50 per meter. This is because it would be classed as a non-essential replacement and the charge is made to cover the work involved.

Just a heads up ahmyerda, there are certain criteria you would need to meet before we would agree to fit a credit meter in place of the existing prepayment one.

This will depend on your particular circumstances but includes things like if you own or rent the property, any previous accounts with us and the results of a credit check.

Sorry I can't offer more positive advice but hope this at least provides a degree of clarification. Give me a shout if you need any more details as will be happy to help.

  • Although the £50 charge is standard across most companies- it might be worth asking if they will waive it. An offhand comment to someone sat next to me while I thought i was on hold resulted in me getting my replacement (from econ 7 to regular) meter free of charge. Just remember to be nice when asking, this is a discretionary action on the part of the customer service rep that you speak to.

Calling midweek often helps as there are usually a limited number of times a rep can do this- too early and they might be saving them for more deserving cases later, too late and they will have run out.

Hi malc thanks for that. If eon had phoned me during the switch and explained i needed to pay for new meters then id have done it (grumpily!) I just think its a little bizarre that they put me on a different tarrif with no warning. Oh well its not the end of the world!

What id like is to call eon and sort this out so i can have the tarrif i wanted (fix online 8 i think) and just pay for the meters. whats the chances of this happening?

Eon are about the only company that charge to have quarterly meters fitted. Some may refuse, mind you - and some may request a security deposit if you fail their security check (eg: B/Gas).

EDF and Southern are too of the more amenable companies when to comes to getting prepayment meters taken out.

I would not recommend changing to NPower - even if they are cheap for you. Their customer service is absolutely dire!

    No they're not.

e.g. Scottish Power would charge £45 and nPower £60

(but as I mentioned earlier, call them and see what you can negotiate)

    Hi ahmyerda

Before we agree to fit a credit meter in place of a prepayment one, there are certain checks we need to carry out. These include a credit check.

If all is ok, we will replace the meter and put you on a credit tariff.

Each request is looked at individually and the outcome will depend on the specific circumstances involved. I would have a chat to one of our Prepayment teams as these are best placed to advise you quickly and accurately.

Just a heads up ahmyerda; Fixonline 8 was withdrawn at the end of June and is no longer available. There are other online tariffs which can be seen on our website.

Alternatively, as you have done before, pop your usage on to one of the comparison sites. This will list all the tariffs, both with us and the other suppliers.

Hope this is useful. Give me a shout if I can help further as will be happy to do so. :)

Exactly the same thing happened to me when I moved house. I phoned Scottish Power and they said they'd take over the supply straight away (took over 8 weeks for the electric) and they'd put me on the online tariff (put on standard prepayment instead). Wouldn't swap the meters until I'd been with them for 12 months and stumped up the £90 so I changed to British Gas who did it for free.
