Check them regularly for butterfly eggs and caterpillars - look under the leaves for clusters of yellow eggs or caterpillars and squish them.
If you lend someone a tenner and never see them again, it was probably worth it.

I had this problem last year so bad I couldn't use any of it! So this year I have spent some money on this ... http://www.gardening-naturally.com/acatalog/info_Agralan_Enviromesh.html

Last year was my first year - this is my second so expecting more!

The only sure way to stop the cabbage white is netting. The white fly is another problem, try to encourage predators such as ladybirds. Ladybirds are attracted by stinging nettles so have a patch somewhere in the garden it you have the room. If all else fails and you don't mind using chemicals then pretherin or similar, plenty of links to products on google, but preferable try and build a micro culture in your garden to provide the balance needed to control pests and attract beneficial insects, it takes longer but is far cheaper.

    Good Luck

  • We invested in a cage made up of enviromesh and have no problems with butterflies. The only problem is everything grows so quick. Whitefly is no problem as I just shake the veggies when I cut them and they all fly off. They do not appear to do any harm. The mesh is not cheap but our cage should last for years and it does work.
