Problem visiting Google using Chrome

Options
Suddenly, whilst using Chrome, when I try to visit google.co.uk I get the following message:

"The website at www. google. co. uk contains elements from the site bin.clearspring.com, which appears to host malware – software that can hurt your computer or otherwise operate without your consent. Just visiting a site that contains malware can infect your computer. For detailed information about the problems with these elements, visit the Google Safe Browsing diagnostic page for bin.clearspring.com. Learn more about how to protect yourself from harmful software online."
I've googled from "contains elements from the site bin.clearspring.com, which appears to host malware" and it seems other people are having the same problem with websites other than google.
Any ideas what this is about? Only thing I can connect it to is a Java update that I installed right before this happened. Or something to do with a google ad that I clicked through on a search site via the cashback site I use...?

Do you get the same with any other browser?

Firefox seems to recognise bin.clearspring.com as hosting malware for me, which is odd - because Clearspring is a major content sharing company which I would not associate with malware. So perhaps that is a false positive.

The only other thing that I can think of is that the "Java update" was not a Java update at all, and that perhaps your Hosts file has been tampered with, and is redirecting your attempt to access google.co.uk elsewhere.

Whatever, I'd follow the malware guide at the top of the Techie forum section.

It wouldn't be surprising for IE not to notice if a site contained malware, IE is still one to the best back doors for malware to infect windows. Maybe someone hacked the clearsprings site??

Not having any problems with IE, a search using google seems to indicate that people are only reporting problems with Chrome and a variety of websites.

I also had a bit of a panic about the Java update, how can I check whether it was genuine or whether my Hosts file has been tampered with? The update all looked pretty normal. Actually my PC is now saying that there's another Java update available - again it all looks bona fide but I'm relunctant to install now just in case...

I downloaded Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and ran a quick scan which didn't find anything.

Many major sites running Microsoft servers have been hacked recently.

After seeing some of the replies on here: www google.co.uk/support/forum/p/Webmasters/thread?tid=28a9a88d9ac2db17&hl=en
I seem to have solved the Chrome/google issue

Looks like it was something to do with gadgets on the igoogle homepage. Using IE, I removed two games that I added last week and now Chrome is working fine.

Do you think it's safe to assume all's fine with my PC - since I didn't access those games once I started to get the warning and Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware didn't pick anything up?

I'm getting the same when I visit the Next website to look at shoes! Google Chrome detects malware through bin.clearspring.com.
