PINSentry Authentication Card

I am waiting for a PINSentry card reader to arrive in the post. Today I received a PIN number for an "authentication card". This is news to me.
Is this a replacement debit card or something else? The card hasn't arrived yet and the PIN letter refers to a card and the last 4 numbers of the card don't match my current debit card.
Thanks.

You use your debit card for the PINsentry machine. People who have Barclays accounts here use a debit card with their PINsentry machine.
Not sure what the authentication card is for. When I opened mine, I don't need a PINsentry machine to log in or do transactions between my other Barclays acccounts.

That's what I thought, though here is the letter.....
"Here's your PIN for your Authentication card with the card number ending XXXX to use with PINsentry for Online Banking."Remember this: nothing worth doing is easy.0 -

It is the card they issue to people who have accounts that can be operated online but do not have a current account with a chip and pin debit card.
Here's mine:-0 -
The OP has a bank account with Barclays though...
I guess when you try the PINsentry machine, use your debit card and authentication card, and see which one works.0 -

I realise that. Barclays probably don't or at least the department that issues the PIN Sentry don't.
The PIN will probably only work with the authentication card.0 -
In the next few days I'll have a Visa Debit card with a PIN and an authentication card and PIN. Why I can't just use my Visa card I don't know. I'll give them a call tomorrow.Remember this: nothing worth doing is easy.0

I also received an authentication card with my pinsentry device even though I already had a Debit card
It transpired that the authentication card was linked to another one of my online Barclays accounts, and Barclays systems did not recognise that I already had an account with a Debit card. I suspect the OP's circumstances are similar.
In my own case I actually consider it an advantage as I simply leave the card in the device at all times, and never have to remove my Debit card from my wallet to log on to online Banking.0 -

This is what I'm thinking. I can keep the Authentication card at home with the reader and if my wallet/card ever gets lost/stolen I'd still have internet access whilst I wait for a new card.Remember this: nothing worth doing is easy.0 -
Quick update...
PINsentry reader finally arrived this morning. The Authentication card arrived yesterday. Have tried both cards and they both log me into online banking fine :j. The Authentication card is registered to my E-Savings account.Remember this: nothing worth doing is easy.0 -
You should only get an authentication card if you don't have a debit card/cash card on your current account, very strange!0
