Tax refund question

Hi,
About 6 months ago my dad received a call from the inland revenue so he called to let me know that he had given them my number - which was fine as i have nothing at all to worry about in that sense!!
So the man called me informed me that i was due a tax rebate and that they had tried to send out a cheque to my old address which of course had been returned so he wanted my new address to re-send it to me. So of course gave him all my details and waited.
And waited and waited.
I called them back and asked if there had been some sort of problem due to the situation which had occured before they assured me that there hadn't been and they would send an email to the back office team to issue it as it had not been actioned.
So again i waited they sent me a letter saying that due to a new system being introduced i would have to wait until the end of June which again was fine.
But now i have received a letter asking me to provide a statement of when i have claimed benefits within that tax year.
My query is what with all the 0845 calls and waiting times on these am i worthwhile claiming this money at all as they will not tell me how much the initial amount was thought to be but i am also left thinking that its my money and i worked hard for that but i also dont want to jump through hoops and have to explain my situation to every person in the call centre of inland revenue and DWP.
Is this the normal proceedure of the inland revenue and has anyone else experienced this problem or anything similar?

Can you not ask how much the sum is??0

I did ask but they said to me that they couldn't tell me how much it was!! Bloomin ridiculous - but now apparently it has to be re-calculated which is a complete joke considering they told me that i was entitled to a rebate. Madness!!
