Well, I can only answer the question honestly. If you don't believe me, or my source, then that's up to you.

My apologies for not getting full in depth references to the FSA etc,

I do believe you were told this but I not agree with you (or rather your friend who told you in the pub) and I have explained why.

I do not accept a bank employees knowledge is necessarily correct. As has been reported many times on this forum, they are not always the most reliable sources for financial advice. When you next speak to your friend with insider knowledge:A, you can ask him to provide a link to this FSA regulation which you quoted.

I used to get many phone calls from the bank ( which I have my current account with) telling me it was time for my "current account review" and wanting me to make an appointment.I declined on numerous occasions as I knew it would be an hour long sales pitch!
They have now given up on me, and phone for my wife instead, who is the joint account holder; as she works during the day she is never here to take the calls...but the best bit is that the bank employee won't tell me what the call concerns for "Data protection reasons" He he he

    :rotfl: Well used excuses are:
    1. It's data protection regulations
    2. It's health and safety regultions
    3. It's FSA regulations
    4. It's consumer protection regulations
    5. It's head office regulations

and if none of the above - blame it on the computer

If they want you to have an "appointment"
Say you will be charging them £50/hour for your time include traveling time and also any expenses incurred such as parking and petrol used at 40p/mile.
Say you want the office manager to sign acceptance of these terms prior to agreeing.

£50/hr I would suggest is reasonable as a penalty rate. It is not £200/hr solicitors silly money nor is is £25/hr skilled tradesman work rates.
40p/mile is one of the I.R approved mileage rates so totally justifiable.

So now they have 3 options:
    Open account immediately
pay your for your waste of time - and then open account.
Face a complaint to the ombudsman following their ineviatable failure to satisfy you once you make a complaint about their inability to open an account on the spot - which will cost them £500.

    Let them go figure.................

Lol Very interesting suggestion but if I tried that I think they might add a 4th option of thinking I was a nut and asking me to leave the branch! :)

Seriously in both cases where I was refused opening an account without an appointment no argument I put forward to open an account without an interview made the slightest difference, in the case of NR I protested that I had fairly recently opened an account by just walking in with the paperwork and was informed it was a change of policy not to do so now!

I walked into a branch of NatWest today never having been a customer. I was seen straight away. I walked away with a savings account. The fact find was occupation, dependants and whether a home owner (which I assume were for marketing purposes but I crossed the boxes to say that I didn't want any marketing). The rest was for identity check and absolutely no attempt was made to sell me any product other than I went in and asked for.
