Buying second hand for a baby......where would you drawn the line?

  • Im expecting our first in October. I would use everything second hand, apart from mattress, car seat, bottles, dummys, bed sheets and towels
  • People do change mattresses in prams. I worked in a baby shop for three years and people regularly ordered new mattresses for carry cots.
I'd change mine. With the exhaust fumes and general dirt that a pram is exposed to outside I would never personally use mine for a child to sleep in other than while we are out anyway.

Most Carry Cots are not ventilated and not suitable for long periods of sleep.

Hmm *thinks* There's a lot of stuff I've bought new but passed down from child to child - for example breast pump and bottles, cot mattress and car seat.

As has been mentioned, I wouldn't use a secondhand car seat without knowing it's history, or a cot mattress from elsewhere. Not sure about a breast pump, although I wouldn't rule it out completely.

DD1 brought a new mattress I think, it then got used for dd2

Got a new cot and mattress for DS which then got passed onto to SIL for nephew

This baby (due November) has a new cot and mattress (mum and dad brought as brother's girlfriend also having a baby at same time and they brought them one so are being 'fair') - baby was a surprise and had got rid of all our baby stuff

Had 2nd hand car seat for dd1 and dd2 (was cousins originally so knew didn't have accident), but we didn't have a car so only used occasionally.
Did buy new car seat for ds (more as we had a car by then and the old one was pink)

Friend has offered me her old car seat for this baby, so may just use that

I was a nanny for a few years before I had DS1 so got everything handed from them, only bought pram and bedding and mattress.
