Social Services help

Just wondering if anyone can help me? I am in a wheelchair due to a genetic illness. My kids are all leaving home (going to uni, moving into a flat etc) in the next few months. I have relied on them to help me around the house etc - they have basically been my carers for many years. My husband works long hours (he leaves at 7 in the morning and gets home between 7 and 8 in the evening). I was wondering if Social Services could help - say come in at lunchtime to make me a sandwich and put some washing on? Any advice?

You have a husband he will be expected to do it. My advice SS only cause grief you can ask, fill in some forms wait months for an assessment then they will tell you there is no money. It is your OH's moral duty to look after you. Been through it all.Barclaycard 3800

Yes you can ask SS to come out and do an assesment on your situation.Just wondering if anyone can help me? I am in a wheelchair due to a genetic illness. and your DH is also entitled to a Carer's Assessment, once he's your sole carer. And they will also do a financial assessment and agree that you need X to be put in place, but because of your household income they won't pay for it. If that happens, it may be more cost-effective to pay for your own help, especially as help provided by Social Services will be limited to what THEY say you need doing.Yes you can ask SS to come out and do an assesment on your situation.
But if there are things you could do if you had the right aids and adaptations, an assessment by an Occupational Therapist might also help.
I think you may need to think about what you actually NEED doing during the day, and what you're used to having done, and reach a compromise. For example, a sandwich could be made the night before, washing could be left until the evening, and so on.
Or you could pay for a home help / cleaner / companion once or twice a week, on your terms, to do whatever's needed at the time rather than a fixed list.Signature removed for peace of mind0 -
Well thanks for the advice - I think I'll give them a call (obviously when the birds have flown) and see if I get anywhere.Me transmitte sursum, caledoni0

I would like some ramps installed, so I'll speak to OT. Not heard about a carers assessment. My daughter is currently claiming CA, but of course when she moves away she'll lose that. I guess I could get someone else to claim it, but they need to do 35 hours a week of help, and its such a small amount (£53.90 a week), that I can't imagine many people would be willing to do it.Me transmitte sursum, caledoni0 -
I'd ask for a referral now, as it can take several months before you are seen.
I was on this list for ss to come and see me since last summer, about 2 weeks ago i get a call to say i have now reached the top of the list, and arrangements were made to come and visit me.
They knew 2 months ago i was moving as i needed some advise from them and i also told them the new address. A few days ago the appointment was cancelled and reason was that i was now out of their area, i would now go to the bottom of the list else where.
So i could be waiting for another year :mad:0 -
