I have been in this position when my two were younger. My husband worked shifts and we decided that it was not viable for me to go back to work (I was a beauty therapist so not on a lot of money) so I trained as a childminder and did this until the youngest went to school. He is now 15 and half, where does the time go!!!
  • i paid my childminder £4.50 and hour and that included snacks and lunch. Some insist you bring your own with you or charge you a set fee on top to provide food. I also needed to take nappies and formula too
The nursery was £30 a day which included food but not nappies or formula.
  • Nursery fees here £600 per week, childminder will be around £4 per hour.

Hi i'm a childminder and will just say where i live (South) no childminder would work all week for £50..sorry. As an example i charge between £35-£45 per day for care from 8.30am-5.30pm. I either do daily fees or hourly which depends on the hours needed..i.e a couple of hours slap bang in the middle of a day will incur more due to the fact it messes up a whole day not just for me but the other childrens day.
Shift work is usually always charged at either a full day or a half fee cost for the days you dont use to keep them safe, i have never done this though so cannot say for sure what costs would be.

Look into all benefits available to you and the vouchers for work, again never had them but know other minders who take them. Or like others have said see if your wife would train as a C/M..what does she do now if you dont mind me asking? It is a lovely job, well paid if you have enough children and suits you what you do..only down side is the unreliability of it but like any self employed job that is to be expected.

Good luck hope you find something to help you out x

Wow that's cheap - for a mid range nursery in Surrey it's £250 pw - which is over £1000 per month when spread over 52 weeks...
