Credit Rating More Likely Life of Balance Than 0%?

I recently got turned down for another 0% balance transfer...bringing an untimely halt to my tarting exploits!
Is it more likely that I would be accepted for a life of the balance transfer such as the Marks and Spencer card at 3.9%?
I want to apply but I don't want to damage my credit rating further if I'm turned down again...

Sorry for the LONG LONG delay...I've since got other cards and been turned down again more recently and I've just found my post again...obviously I forgot to subscribe and hence never got your reply.
I've checked my credit report and there's nothing bad on it as far as I can see. I've closed down all credit card accounts and only have my mortgage and the unsecured loan that was part of the mortgage product. I've never missed a payment and have nothing else negative that I can see, think of or know of!
I've never paid to get my actual credit score (didn't want to waste the money). Will this tell me much more? Will I even know what the number means?
Does checking your own credit report leave a negative footprint on the report or is it just checks from other lenders? I'm sure they could make the whole process a little more transparent with minimal effort...This is a system account and does not represent a real person.
