Potatoes are pretty hardy things really so long as they don't get blight. I wouldn't worry too much for the time being. NB. The original seed tuber rots away and looks slimy inside the remnants of the skin - could that have been what you were seeing when you were digging them up?

Slugs come in two varieties, the above ground slither along ones, and the smaller, normally black, keel type, which are underground and will jut love to eat your spud tubers, which is why spuds are normally dug up in Autumn and stored, otherwise the keel slugs have a feast

The holes in your leaves are almost certainly slugs / snails, they come out at night and are safely tucked up in their slimy little beds by the time you get up

You could go round at night with a torch to check

I heard on radio 4 that the RHS have given out a slug / snail warning. Seems the hot dry weather made the slugs etc hibernate [if that is right word], the nice rain has woken them all up again, and they are starving and looking for anything green to eat

Yorkie - maybe .... there were maybe 2/3 of them .... I didnt think of that though!

Farway - Can slugs really manage to balance on the leaves of a plant?!?! They look too heavy for it to me. I will definitely check tonight.... as much as it pains me, I HATE SLUGS/SNAILS with a passion. If I find some .... what is the solution? Im not sure I can cope with the idea of having to remove them by hand, one by one...............

I sympathise - perhaps you could wear rubber gloves/old pair of gloves kept for the purpose if you go slug hunting. I loathe removing "nasties" myself - but can cope if I'm wearing my rubber gloves (washed afterwards).
