Taxing car as a disabled person but no log book.

I am getting myself in a real pickle with this.
It is a bit complicated to me but I'm confident one of you will have the answer.
I am eligible for free road tax but have just bought a second hand car and have not got the log book yet.
Car tax is due tomorrow.
What do I need to do?
I have got the exemption form from DWP, insurance and MOT certificate but local Post Office say they cannot do it without the log book.
My son now has my old car which has tax left for 5 months but the tax disk has disabled written on.
Does he need to change it and if so, can he do that at a local Post Office?
If we need to go to the DVLA, which isn't open until Monday, are we still taxed?
Thanks

Your son cannot legally use the old car with the tax disc on. He needs to give you the disc and take the log book to the DVLA office to get it changed to PLG and buy a tax disc.

You need to take the little green slip you have to the local DVLA office along with your old tax disc and get it changed to Disabled. As long as the dealer had sent the yellow bit off when they bought it to register it as being "with trade" you should be able to do this without the full log book.

We don't have the log book for the old car yet because I only bought it at the beginning of July but couldn't get on with it.
The log book hasn't come through yet.
I now have the new car that I bought yesterday and have the little green slip but will no doubt be waitng for ages for the log book for that one.
Will my car not be taxed until I can get to DVLA on Monday?
Can my son tax the old car without the log book?
    I am very confused.

No. Need to visit Dvla first to change taxation class.
