Your son could qualify for the insurance by opening a current account elsewhere, setting up one direct debit on it and switching this to the Nationwide.

Or write to Head Office - your local branch will only repeat the rule book, as I expect that they have no discretion, but someone nearer the top may be able to use common sense.

Apt's suggestion may well be simpler and quicker though!
  • There are some posts on a Spain forum that I use where posts today have said they have been unable to withdraw cash from ATMs at all this week with their Flexaccount cards. I have asked the question as to whether they had the old Cirrus cards which have now been replaced, but as yet, no response. Quite a worrying situation if indeed there is a problem with the Visa debi card!

I am in Spain and will be trying my Flex Visa Debit card at an ATM tomorrow. Any problems and I'll report back.

I am considering to switch my current a/c from A&L which is now earning very little interest to NW. I am interested in their EU Travel Insurance.

But after study carefully, I just notice it is not worthy at all as we need to feed it at least £750.00 monthly and we need to switch it using transfer services. I could get annual Multi Trip EU insurance for £20ish from money supermarket.com

  • Is anybody else now finding that Customer Services via the secure message service is stonewalling you ?. Three messages of complaint asking whether they want me to put my complaint on the situation in writing and they don't reply. It doesn't say much for Customer Services.

I had a letter saying did I want to put it through the complaints procedure the rubbish over Nationwide increasing their costs and the underhand nature that it was putting one set of customer against the rest, the naughty people that use their card abroad verses those that don't and how it cost them so much that they just had to charge etc etc etc .... not that the pseudo bank wanted to make a fast buck by increasing it's charges and just did populist underhand propaganda for it's effect.

So yes I informed them I wanted to take this further via the screens but they just won't acknowledge that I told them that. Seems another letter to the CEO is required with a 2nd class stamp. I moved £50,000 out as a penalty to Nationwide and will move more out. If it was a bank you would get a phone call offering you something to stop you taking your business elsewhere but these council estate bank tellers can't be bothered. Seems Nationwide is very jobs worth.

Reading the recent part of the thread on whether you qualify as to whether it's your main account, it seems they are jokers since I don't have a regular salary going in which is suppose to be a criteria although I do / did have a lot in. So they bend that rule but are prepared and I note other people found the same, but have arrogance not to offer the worthless free travel insurance to other people as reported on the thread. It's such a micky mouse operation of getting up so many peoples noses, some of those people you would think they would want to keep as customers but evidently not.

To follow up. Nationwide Flex Visa Debit worked fine here in Spain this morning. Took out €300 with no problem. Pity the rate has dropped a bit.
  • Robertinherts,You think after 600 posts and your great example they would get it.
Its no wonder the bankers continue in the current vein, its too easy.
  • Robertinherts,Can I ask what the jist of the artical was? outcome etc.
