Car is being sold!

Due to number of reasons, I have finally decided to sell my car.

Well, I decided to sell it a couple weeks back but this is my first free weekend.

It needs some odd work done which will put off private buyers so am hoping to sell it to a dealer.

Ideally, I would like them to offer me a much cheaper / older / smaller car and then because my car will be worth much more, a little bit extra cash.

I have had one offer so far but I wasnt too convinced on the car.

If not, I will be happy with just a cash sale and buying another car privately down the line.

I've spent most of the afternoon looking for local dealers but they all sell higher priced, prestige cars so no go for me.

Can anyone offer any advise? I've only sold a car once but it was an awesome car so got £3k for it.

This time, I'm hoping for a car worth less than £1k with a cash payout of £200. Anything extra is a bonus.

We don't have a crystal ball, so perhaps you may wish to tell us all what exactly you are trying to sell.

I was just after more advice with regards to the process, ie calling before? driving randomly around? that sort of thing...

But if you would like info its a Renault Laguna 1.9 Dci 53 reg plate with 65,200 miles

OP you are selling a banger to buy another banger why? You will probably be asked that question from any dealer too.

Its not a banger. The car is just too big for me and I dont need such a large sized car / engine and could do with saving money on insurance / fuel.

If I got a smaller car (fiesta, corsa) it will be more than half my insurance a month and fuel. And will also be much easier to park as I am not too confident in parking my car at the moment. Or, I could easily do without a car for a little while but as OH doesnt drive we would need a car between us so would have to get one eventually.

To answer any future questions, I got the car in the first place because I was in a long distance relationship and was travelling loads of miles a month and at the time this car was perfect, then he dumped me and since then, havent needed it so much.

Sorry I was obviously typing (slowly!!) when you stated which car. Based on your original thread it sounded older.

If I were you OP and you don't use it much then running costs are not a huge issue then rthe saying "The devil you know" comes into play.

If the car is running OK you will be much better keeping it than risking someone elses tat.

Its not so much the running costs its the cost to insure it, it cost me over £60 a month where a little 1.2 run about is only around £20 a month

  • If you're trying to save money, sell it privately, and replace it privately.

    Thanks Pew Pew,

That was my original thought, but since I decided to sell it the drivers window has decided to have electrical problems and the air con and fan no longer work so I thought I would get a better deal selling it to a dealer who could fix this cheaper?

Quick edit: I know its not advised but I went to we buy any car and they quoted me £1,135 with the faults. Wasnt thinking of taking it there, just wanted to see what it was worth, is this a reliable source?

Sara, don't sell your car to a dealer. You will get a much better price if you sell it privately. Get a local mechanic or your OH to fix the window and anything else that needs doing, may be just a fuse or a relay somewhere.

Then get it valeted by your local handwash place, should cost you no more than £15 quid for inside and out. Remove all stickers, clear out all your personal possessions (do this before the valet!) and make sure all lights work etc. Then make sure you have all the service history, inc present and old MOT certificates.

After that, take some good photos of the car, front end, 3 quarter front and side and the rear aswell as the interior. Then check out the market value by checking Parkers guide then put it up for sale on ebay and local classifieds.

I did write a more in depth guide a while back, I will try and find a copy for you and anyone else who wants one.

Good Luck, but remember, do not sell your car to the trade, sell privately, bag the cash then go and do a deal with some negotiating power!
