Stepping back from the crisis thing week, if your OH's business only earnt £6K last year then maybe he should consider getting a PAYE job, even if it's just part time whilst he continues to run the business. Or could you work part time when he is at home to look after the children?0

Are you claiming everything you are entitled to?

Could you sell anything?0 -
wow- what a lot of replies - i have not got time to read them all until kids go to bed later as OH is working away this weekend and i have 2 bored kids to entertain on a rainy day...
I will read in detail and thank people later but to clear up one thing the camping holiday is £460 pounds in total....
not too bad for 10 days ....
i am trying to keep kids entertained with a mammoth lego building session whilst also stock taking the pantry and freezer to meal plan for the next 3 months to see how far our existing food and growing food (veg and lambs) will take us before we have to buy stuff....
thanks everyone

If your Mum wants to help, let her. She is supporting her grandchildren in having a holiday, and the holiday won't be the same for the others if you, and the childrren are not there. I would be very sad if my daughter (who is a very frugal person) didn't accept help in this situation.
Also, look for one or two evening jobs, to see you through. Just in the short term.0 -
The Blue Cross have a fund for unexpected large vet bills. Can I put the phone number on here? - Don't know, please can anyone tell me (before I break a rule!)? I spoke to a very nice lady, she said call when in need..
Sorry to hear about your dog. It would be fine to post the number here as long as it's not something you will profit from (which of course you won't).

I'd say go on holiday! The break will do you all good.
Not a lot you can do about the vets bill, but regarding the car, can you not change the spark plugs yourself??? Apparently it's really easy and you can get a guide online. Will save you paying the hourly garage fee and you can buy the plugs from ebay.
You can have some cooking apples from my garden, although perhaps a bit bulky to send in the post!Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')
No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)0 -
As the main idea of this holiday is that you share a break with your family - seems to be little point in changing venue - my reaction would be - to hell with the expense - we'll have to stew the canary for dinner

Seriously, no-one ever knows what's round the corner and whether you'll get another chance to do this again in the future.0 -
I would go as well. I would try and cut back where I could to minimise the spend. Enjoy yourselves.0

I would also go on the holiday. It will be precious time with all your family whilst the children are still young enough to enjoy it.
There isn't a lot you can do about the vets bill now, nor the car as no doubt you will need that for your holidays. But I think the suggestions of having a memorial at home with your family instead of traveling to the funeral are good ones. It looks like it would save you quite a bit of money. That said, depending on how close you were to your Uncle it might be a time to say screw the budgets for a couple of weeks and go anyway. Only you know how you feel about that.
But don't cancel the holiday. Time with your family is even more important following the death of your uncle x:j0
