I recently bought a domain only from 1&1. I was under the impression that I could point the name servers to somewhere else but when I go to the DNS settings it says unmodifiable.
Have I misunderstood what I was buying?
Thx

i have a package that lets me forward the request on - is this what you want to do?Ever stop to think and forget to start again?0

I've got my 1&1 domain pointing to my pages hosted by ntl - don't think it's got anything to do with DNS settings, though it's a long time since
i set it up. Just had a quick look at the 1&1 Control Panel, under the Administration tab, you click on 'manage domains', select the domain in the list, on the next page under 'destination' click 'edit' & then type in the full location of your home/web page.
If yours is a different set-up then suggest you contact 1&1 helpdesk for info.0 -
Ideally I want to change the name servers to point to my BY webspace. Although I would be quite happy to forward it instead, but haven't (or can't find) any option to do that.woo wrote:i have a package that lets me forward the request on - is this what you want to do?
Can't change the destination and I have contacted them by email (monday) but they are awfully slowTallymanjohn wrote:...Just had a quick look at the 1&1 Control Panel, under the Administration tab, you click on 'manage domains', select the domain in the list, on the next page under 'destination' click 'edit' & then type in the full location of your home/web page.

If you have only just bought the domain then you will need to wit a few hours before you can change the nameservers. Try again this afternoon and it should be OK.0

I've had it since Sunday

Not sure if this helps or not, but they don't allow you to forward to a non .com / .html ie they wont let you forward it to a .asp or something else. Smile, you only get one life, LIVE IT.0

As BY & NTL are the same company now there shouldn't be a lot of difference between the way webspace is handled. 1&1 have a phone help line - 0870 2411247 (or 01753 490401/2 according to 'say no to...'), could be worth a try.0

Ok, one last thing. Can someone who's only got a domain with 1&1, i.e. no webhosting package, try this for me please.
1. Go into the 1&1 control panel and go to the Administration page.
2. Click on "Manage Domains".
3. Tick one of the domains in the Domain Overview list.
4. Click on the down arrow on the DNS Settings option.
5. Click on "Edit DNS" when the menu drops down. Now you should be on the DNS Settings screen.
Q1. Under Basic DNS Settings does it say "1&1 name server (unmodifiable)" ?
Q2. Under Advanced DNS Settings does it say "IP Address (A-Record) 1&1 IP Address (Unmodifiable)" ?
Thanks.0 -
OK, tried that - get stuck at the 'click down arrow on DNS..' - there's no mention of DNS. Just to confirm, I have one .net domain name with 1&1, cheapest package (£18.66/year last invoice) which gives me 5 e-mail addresses, no webspace, just a link and mail forwarding to my ntl homepage. I'm probably wrong but the way you describe it sounds like you have got 1&1 web-hosting as well, otherwise there would be no need for IP addresses etc.
Here's what my overview page looks like:

This is what I signed up for http://order.1and1.co.uk/xml/order/Instant;jsessionid=8F6069B159B2082EF353F20F32F8281E.TC33a?__frame=_top&__lf=Static&__sendingdata=1&dom=1
If I don't get a response from their support by tomorrow I'll give them a ring, oh what fun that will be
Why's everything such a hassle
