Economical second hand car needed

Hi
I'm looking to buy a second hand car, no more than about £1500, which is economical to run (insurance, fuel etc). This probably means diesel. It also needs to be big enough for 5 people and ideally have some boot space. It doesn't need to be very quick but it will be going on the motorway quite a bit so it must have reasonable power etc.
Any suggestions please?
Thanks

I know someone on here will come on at some point asking if I work for Proton- I don't, but I own three!
They're brilliant in terms of value- secondhadn Persona with reasonable mileage and condition for £500-£600, usually cheap to insure, and the MPG on all of mine is fantastic (45 on the coupes, 50 on the V6-drops to maybe 15 when you plant it though!)
Mainly petrol available in the models, but there is a diesel variant.0 -
Similar vein to proton, how about a daewoo leganza? 2.0 whilst not that economical (ok, its mpg is crap) its comfy on the motorway, pretty decent in size. Can pick one up for well under £1000 with sensible mileage, and electric everything, leather, air con. Based on vauxhall parts so cheap to repair and will run forever.0

i'll obviously plug the ford focus TDDi version (98-03 - facelift), should be able to get one now for around that money. mine gets me around 50-60mpg, at 130,000 miles and still runs like a dream.0

Fiestas are cheap to buy, cheap to insure, cheap to get parts for. 5 door versions seat five okay bit if you will always have 5 adults in it you might want to try something a bit bigger. Just look out for rust on the bodywork.Changing the world, one sarcastic comment at a time.0

Ill stick a vote in for Mondeo.

I have a Laguna DCI.Easily big enough for 5, very large boot and averages 50mpg with about 60mpg on the motorway. Its very quiet for a diesel and fairly comfortable. You could also get one for your budget.
That's the good stuff.The bad stuff is that its a Renault.0 -
Look at the bangers the local taxi drivers use and buy one of those, theres a reason taxi drivers use 406's, mondeo's, vectra's and even the odd Kia barge
