Has Argos overcharged for extended Warranty?

I bought a digital camera from Argos for £79.99 down from £99.99 on sale. The insurance sold with the camera I feel was incorrectly specified. The insurance specified and sold in the accompanying leaflet states for items (not limited to digital cameras) between £90 - £99.99.
The item insured was only valued at £79.99. Should the camera be replaced, refunded or revalued it would only be worth £79.99. Therefore I am not sure why Argos has sold me insurance for an item valued greater.
I contacted Argos by email. Here is there reply:
"I can confirm that although the item you purchased was £79.99, the full price for this is £99.99. Therefore the replacement product cover that is supplied is for the full amount of the item. If you needed to use the replacement cover you would only be covered for £79.99."
Can anyone confirm if this is correct and possible relate it to a consumer standard to strenghten my complaint?

How much is the price difference, is it really worth the aggro?
Just keep the email they sent you as proof of your entitlement should you need to claim. I guess they're saying if the camera develops a fault and isn't repairable then they'd give you £99.99 to buy a replacement, rather than £79.99 if you bought the cheaper cover. Surely fair enough?
EDIT: Actually, think it implies there'd only give you £79.99 thus a bit of a rip off. But if that's their policy then that's their policy, take it or leave it (ask for a refund of the insurance cover).0 -
Yes the difference is very little, but does seem confusing.
Argos's statement says I am only entitled to £79.99 of which I paid. Of course, should they offer a replacement of £99.99 I woiuld accept, but that isn't can couldn't be the case unfortunately.0 -
Having a look at their site, replacement product cover for items £70-£79.99 is £14.99 and for items £90-£99.99, it's £18.99. Which did you pay?
I'd have thought it would be on the current cost of the item, not a value it once was. In any case, you have 45 days to request a full refund of the agreement.Squirrel! If I tell you who I work for, I'm not allowed to help you. If I don't say, then I can help you with questions and fixing products. Regardless, there's still no secret EU law.
Now 20% cooler0 -
The warranty is classed as a product on the Argos system and each item in the Argos catalogue is linked to the relevent warranty product.
More than likely when the price was amended, they forgot to change the linked warranty.0 -
My guess is that the limit of the warranty is directly linked to the price you paid for it - it seems unlikely that they would cover you for more value than the item you purchased, but obviously that's more of a common sense standpoint than a legal one...0
