not sure where to post but need to cancel la fitness

Hi everyone

In March 2008 I signed up to a 24 month contract at la fitness. This didn't start well as they took money from my account without giving me notice. And they have since increased the membership fees without any indication that they were going to do so.

I carried on using the facilities until last year when my father died and we moved over to Wales. So the nearest centre is now 110 mies away from me in Chester.

I've waited until now to do anything about it as there were still issues with my dad's death that needed to be dealt with, and I wanted to be sure that I had paid in full for the full 24 months that I signed up for.

I'm sending a letter off today, recorded delivery, giving them notice that I intend to quit the membership, and have said that I will allow August's payment to be the last payment they take from my account as I will delete the direct debit once that has been taken.

But I'm really worried ... I've heard so many horror stories from people wanting to cancel with la fitness and having debt collection companies come after them. Am I going about this the right way? :(

Make sure you keep a copy of the letter for your records, but as you are giving one calender months notice, you should be fine.

The horror stories about gyms tend to be because people didnt read t's and c's and are trying to get away early.

Make sure you keep a copy of the tracking number and proof of posting.

    Thank you ...

That's why I left it so long, because I wanted to be sure that I was out of contract ...

I'll get the letter sent off recorded delivery ... thanks for the advice (if there was a thumbs up icon I'd use it, lol)

:A <--You deserve this for the statement above :D

But yes as said previously, you've waited out your contract, your now free of any obligation. Usually people come here asking how we can bail them out of their contract and don't like it when we don't tell them what they want to hear!

As long as you make them aware of your intent that you will be cancelling the direct debit on day ... you will be fine. Although saying that, if you have a copy of the T&C's checking the section about cancelling might be worth doing!

This thread has some stories about them:

    Thank you

I haven't got the terms and conditions with me now, I think they got lost somewhere in the move ...

I don't understand why people try and get out of a contract early without a valid reason, and I had one of them (being 110 miles away from the nearest gym lol), but I couldn't afford to have debt collectors sending letters, so I've done it the only way I can think of ...

I've got the letter printed off, just got to send it recorded delivery now

    hi everyone ...

I received a letter from la fitness this morning and they have agreed to cancel my membership, I was really dreading opening the letter ...

they say the membership will be cancelled from 30/09/2010, now I did say that I would allow August's payment to go through (normally goes out on the 30th of each month or the very last working day) and would be deleting the direct debit afterwards, but I'm confused ... does this mean they will take an extra payment off me on 30/09/2010?

I'm soooo glad they actually listened to me, all those months of making sure I kept the payments up, and it's finally over :j

Normally for gyms you pay a month in advance, therefore you pay at the end of august, you will have membersip till the end of september.

So i think they are confirming that the payment on 30/08/10 will be the last.
