Alykes - Zante

Been looking for weeks for a decent holiday for me and my boyfriend and lastnight we booked to go to Alykes in Zante in August for a week, got a good-ish bargain and we absolutely LOVE Zante so we are both very happy :j

We have already been to Argassi and Kalamaki in Zante but never Alykes/Alykanas - Has anyone been there to give me any hints/tips/advice??

Thank you in advance!

Is it Alykes or Alykanas (they're slowling merging into one...)? following is based on Alykanas - much quieter than Argassi/Kalamaki (no McD's!).

Tip 1 - don't change your cash in resort. Around a month ago, local rates varied between 1.13 and 1.15 when Visa rate was 1.19 to 1.23. Check out the main site currency comparison - will probably be 1.14 in Alykanas at the moment.

Tip 2 - Letsos supermarket has a probably the best range of stuff, but get the heavy stuff (water and beer) locally - little difference in price. There's also a Bank of Greece ATM outside the Letsos - not obviously branded, just a screen-print of a building (which may or may not be the Bank of Greece HQ...).

Tip 3 - geat butcher at one of the supermarkets in Katastari (about 45 mins walk inland) - near the strangely pink town hall. Also great cheese and/or cream pies from the bakery a few yards up the road (if they have any left!). Quite a good walk out to Katastari, down to Pigadakia and back (your mileage may vary as they say!)

Tip 4 - if you buy chicken pieces/legs, very likely to be frozen wherever you get them, so may as well pick up at a supermarket (Letsos - the unpriced ones in plastic bags were better than the normal pre-packed/labelled ones).

    Thanks for all that! :)

We are staying in Alykes, and i think the other side of Alykes to Alykanas (if that makes sense?)

Can you walk between the 2 towns?

Hi Nikkilou. I'm soooo jealous! We are just back from Alykes. It's wonderful. There isn't a lot to spend your money on although the prices for what is there is very reasonable. You'll be able to buy pretty much anything you need food wise at the Montes supermarket. The Letsos mentioned earlier is in Alykanas. Can I recommend you go to the Hotel Clio (at the top of the salt flats) for a couple of meals? The food is absolutely amazing and it's well worth the 5 minute walk from the main street to get there. In answer to your other question, yes, you can walk between Alykes & Alykanas. Should take about 20 mins and the latter is a bit busier. If you want to go on any tours I would recommend the Trainaki - which is great fun and the tour around Zante and the trip to Kefalonia are both good and great value for money. I hope you enjoy your trip
