Connecting pc to surround sound amp

I want to connect the audio out put of our pc to our amp for digital playback.

The sound card builtin is 6.1 and has a output (from manual S/Pdif output port) it looks like a RCA socket (coloured yellow) The mobo specs on here say its got SPDIF Out HERE

My Amp Yamaha RX-V357 is capable of playing dts along with 5.1 surround sound. It has two (from manual DTV/CBL Optical) Two little plastic lugs I assume is a optical inputs.

I looked on Maplins and you can get a convertor HERE that plugs into mains (I dont personnel want to plug any more stuff in mains) but is this the only way I can get it to play 5.1 from pc?

Am I right in saying I need Optical to Coaxial Digital Audio Convertor and a optical cable from amp to convertor and a rca cable to connect all of it up to pc from convertor.

Thanks for your help :)

  • hello have you tried what hifi website , they do a forum. someone there maybe able to help. if no one here will.

    http://www.whathifi.co.uk

hope the link works for you.

    see you from kerry.

or try ringing around hifi specialist shops.

    sorry i cant help much.
  • alternatively, try avforums.com
  • From what i can gather your mobo has spdif which takes a coax lead, looking at the specs of your amp it allows a coax input, unless your already using it, which means all you would really need is a coax cable like this http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=47291&criteria=Digital%20Leads&doy=13m9
Sometimes i surprise myself by being right.

They both look like phono connectors to me.

I just thought the yellow one on the amp its marked CD phono so I wonder if I could use a digital coaxial lead one cheaper here Rather than either of the two I think they also called toslink (plug out plastic things that I think are optical)

Yes I would think that you could. There is nothing special about a digital co-ax lead, It's basically phono connectors fitted to co-ax, which you could make yourself if you have a soldering iron. If you already have a phono to phono lead you could try it. The square plugs below it, are protecting the holes for the optical connector ports.

I ordered a digital coaxial cable from these guys in post 8 late afternoon and it came today. Plugged it into the amp (CD) and pc socket in pictures above, and its great, I can now play my music/videos via PC in 5.1 surround sound and Dolby digital brilliant just watched Robbie live in Leeds :) Thanks
