I know cool ain't it.... not like they can get the information off Google or anything or that nearly every single post in this section of the forum is a legitimate request.

What difference would it make if they are telling the truth or not?

If they can get close enough to boot it from a CD (OPHCrack and Nordahl's tool both require this) then they own it - from a security point of view - anyway.

True true its all available on the internet so maybe the OP should look there, just like it is for people who want advice reference R4 Cards for their DS's and ripping DVDs (and more besides) get jumped on for breaking forum rules. Threads subsequently get removed etc, etc, especially if the OPs post count is low. But its OK to tell someone how to break into a computer when you can't confirm whether its theirs or not regardless of how many posts they have or years they've been a member. Seems a bit hypocritical.

"might bypass the login" lol do you know what your talking about?
If it was a BIOS/CMOS password removing the motherboard battery for a few hours would have done the trick.

Best bet is a linux live cd to remove the password.

Might - depends on whether an admin password was set when XP was installed - anyone with a bit of common sense will do this, but...

If it's a hard drive password, there's no chance of recovery.

So, yes, I do know what I'm talking about. I try not to jump to conclusions without full information, and advise accordingly.

(and to reset a CMOS password takes 5sec, not hours..)

Just a note these tools only delete the password, not display it.

I can do it in 2secs.

I'm not judgemental (unlike you). If someone asks for help and it seems legitimate to me, I will help. Common sense prevails. You seem to conclude that because their "friend" has forgotten a password, that they obviously stole the machine

As for being hypocritical. I don't post in those type of topics, I just report them to admin. I do my part in this forum to watch out for those breaking forum rules.

You can spot a legitimate requests from a false one. Forgotten passwords ARE a very common IT related problem would you believe.

Now stop trolling and give some useful input please. Have a nice day :)

Common sense dictates you have no way of knowing whether its legit or not, fact. You have no way of confirming who they are or whether its their friends computer. Surely erring on the side of caution is best in these matters.

But it seems caution is only needed on new users.

Keep up the good work, maybe you should report this thread. I report threads but nothing is done about them, maybe its because I'm not part of the in crowd here.

I'm obviously not psychic like you to be able to tell various requests for things that could be illegal as legitimate or not.

If pointing out the hypocrisy is trolling guilty as charged. Good day.

I shall have to book mark this page for future reference when forum rules are bought up.
  • Oh dear what have I started? :(

My friend (who really does exist) tried the F8 suggestion to no avail. She's going to buy some CD's and I (who also exist) will use the instructions kindly give above to help her out. I hope I haven't broken any forum rules with a legitimate Q. To be honest I disappeared off the forum for a long time because of the amount of petty arguments and point scoring. It's such a useful resource it will be such a shame to have it demeaned like this. Now I am back again, I'll keep on using it as frequently as before because the majority of people here are very friendly and genuinely helpful :)

Thanks everyone, have a great weekend, I'll lket you know how we get on... S

PS: if you hear that there has been a spate of computer theft in East London and the Police are hunting two middle-aged disabled female thieves, you'll know where to send them :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

I checked your posting history and was satisfied that is was a genuine query. Just watch out for the newbies out to make a name for themselves. ;) fwor's solution in post #5 is the one you should use if the manual instructions don't work for you. Forget about ophcrack.
