Returns on Gift cards

Is this fair trading?
I bought a cardigan at Debenhams @ £25, with gift card for £20, plus £5 in cash. It didn't fit properly so I returned it. I was told the refund would be back onto a gift card. Fair enough. But what about the £5 I paid in cash? No, that would have to go on the gift card as well. I now have a gift card for £25.
But what if I then buy another item for £40 and pay the balance in cash? If it was returned, I would get another gift card for the £40 and so on. So none of my actual cash is refunded.
So they are taking my cash and by adding it to a gift card each time they would be making sure I can't spend my money elsewhere. Is this right?

Well as you are returning the product because it does not fit, they can do what they like - they don't actually have to give you anything back.

I would expect there to be a copy of their returns policy by the till somewhere.

If the item was damaged/broken then you have a right to a refund of cash.

But as you stated, it didn't fit properly, then stores more often only offer credit notes back, or in this case gift card.

the rules haven't changed just the credit note if often now the gift card, but to answer your question, ouyes it is right what they are doing as the item didn't fit you and technically there is nothing wrong with it.

I bought trousers for my ds in there once, he didn't want to try them on, but when we get home he tells me they don't fit. This annoyed me as i have mobility problems and this meant another trip to town, i paid in cash but all i got back was a gift card, i was annoyed but there was nothing i could do about it, behind the tills, there are signs that clearly state this.
