Complaining tips?

Hi,
I need some tips on complaining - its something i feel really out of my depth with. I have only complained once in my entire life (to asda for finding a stray hair in my roll) but this was done through the email service that they have. It was however successful as i received a £10 giftcard and they assured me that they would have a bigger clamp down on employees wearing hairnets!!
But as i am sure you all realise there are certain situations where you have to complain at the time, i usually leave this to my partner and feel that uncomfortable that i have to go stand outside - silly i know but i really need help!!!!
Any advice is welcomed - i dont want to complain just for the sake of doing it but i want to be able to stand up for myself in these sort of situations.
Thanks
xx

Keep calm, polite and dispassionate. State what the problem is, why and by how much you have been financially affected, and state clearly what you want to happen, e.g. costs of x amount, replacement holiday, ex gratia payment in recognition of stress and inconvenience. Keep copies of all correspondence and be persistent. And it's always a good idea to know what things are actually worth complaining about and what's not! A bit of perspective perhaps? There must be some tips and guidelines somewhere on this site (not on the forums)."Growth for growth's sake is the ideology of the cancer cell" - Edward Abbey.0

Thanks very much for the replies i know what is acceptable to complain about and what is not the problems i have is actioning the problems, you would think it would be easy as i have previously worked in call centres mainly dealing with complaints i think the main problem is i dont want to be one of those people who go OTT which generally speaking i dont in any other aspects of my life. Its like some weird psychological block lol
