Yes, send the form back as it is asking for benefits info.

I would contact your local Citizens Advice bureau. As far as I can see you might not have been entitled to the Child Tax Credits depending on whether they decide you were a couple or not during that time. As you were being paid money by your ex then his income would have been taken into account if they had known. You will have to pay back any overpaid amount and Citizens Advice will be able to work that out for you. I wouldn't worry about going to jail, that is highly unlikely.

Thankyou Fran. That is my biggest worry. I will pay the money back if they say I have to(which by the sounds of things I will have to)
I don't really deal with stuff like this very well. Have always been very honest and a massive mistake like this has really shaken me. Thankyou for your advice. Do you think I should see the CAB first or just send the form back.?
  • I don't think you will go to jail, but honesty is the best policy. You didn't declare the income, and in all honesty I would be suprised if the tax credit office don't think you were always a couple and he is just working away from home for short stints.

Generally with CTC honesty is the best policy and all I have ever seen on these boards is them claim back an overpayment.

So now presumably I give in correct details on the form? Do I send a covering letter to the effect that I have misundertood and have been receiving too much and am going to pay it back or not. If I answer all these questions differently this time round with no covering letter wont they just swoop on me?

CTC have no idea where he has been. They just know we split up, and are now back. It could have been my dad supporting me or a pension or something. They are just querying how I was supported in the time i was single. They know nothing about him coming back at weekends.

You might have been entitled to Working Tax Credits so you need to tell them what's what.

But your partner's income counts as it's a joint claim.
