pre payment meter
Got a letter today regarding my old house...it was from LCS UTILITY INVESTIGATIONS...saying that i owed British gas £438.06 and to ring them (being LCS) to start a payment plan...now i was a bit confused as to why i owed British gas any money at all, considering i was on a Pre Payment meter...well to my shock they told me i was under paying them by £1 a week and owed them the outstanding money...I have been a pre payment customer for the last 30 years(back in them days in was a slot machine)lol....and i have never had this problem before...can someone please tell me how this happened and is this right...do i really owe them this money..

Older money and token ppm did not get updated as quickly as newer key/smartcard meters when the prices changed. Therefore it is poossible that the meter was collecting £x per unit when it should have been £y per unit and you now ower £y-£x times the number of units used. This would normally be covered in the final bill when you moved out of your old house. Do you still have the final bill?IT Consultant in the utilities industry specialising in the retail electricity market.

Tell them you do not acknowledge the debt, ask them to explain, or better still contact BG and ask them what it's all about and whether they believe you owe them any money. If you do, I'm sure they will be more than happy to explain it to you

Spiro is right, this used to be the case with British Gas,and still is with some suppliers.
British Gas stopped passing this balance onto their custoemrs a few years ago.
Call British Gas (0800 0480303/0330 1000303) and ask.0
