The following is a copy of chat I have had a few minutes ago.

"R: have you had any suspect emails from me today?
14:25 me: No,
14:26 R: if you get anything from me be careful opening it as an email went from my account at 8:45 this morning that I did not send
have changed password
14:27 gmail made me change it saying there was suspicous activity on the account
14:28 me: so they told you about it?
who did it go to?
14:29 R: yes tried to log in and they asked me to change password
seemed to go to a few people from the club
14:30 me: That's good that they picked it up
14:31 R: yep off back to work
me: ok, "

It's good that gmail picked up on this. I thought Gmail were safe!

It is safe, your friend must have left his account logged in somewhere or had a keylogger etc.

The end-user is usually the weakest link in the chain. Either by leaving their account logged in somewhere they shouldn't have, by getting themselves a virus, by using the same password on another site that does get compromised, etc.
They say it's genetic, they say he can't help it, they say you can catch it - but sometimes you're born with it

My gmail was hacked recently by somebody in bulgaria. I have since changed my password. It looks as if someone is going through hacking accounts and spamming with adverts. I've updated my password to have upper and lower case letters as well as numbers, so it'll take a long time to brute force it.
