Mouse mats were useful when people had ball mice; they are a waste of space for optical mice. IMHO.

I second that, I really can't remember the last time I needed a mouse mat.

Can't think of anything worse than a touch pad, give me a wireless laser mouse anytime even when using my laptop.

I still have one at home although it's a 'gaming surface' and not a mouse mat apparently. The accuracy of the mouse is more consistent than on the desk I find.

It's a full MCE keyboard that can be used anywhere up to 10 meters away from my entertainment system. I can control all my media from here on my network including my file server NAS box and external HDD's and I dont need a surface to put my mouse on and I dont have to carry two devices around with me all the time. leaving one hand free to do with what I want.
    It's quite handy actually....
