Freeview boxes from £23.99 - Can you beat it?

  • I simply told NTL to cancel my digital TV subscription. Then I threw away the old set top box. Then I took the cable and screwed a UHF ariel connector onto it, and plugged into my TV, and tuned it in.

Now I get quite a few extra free channels (including e4, news24, tcm, mtv, vh1, etc) without the NTL TV cost. The reason for this, I think, is that NTL don't 'switch off' the signal to your house.

Anyway, it works for me, why not give it a go....

I have an NTL cable feed in my bedroom but no box, I don't want to pay the extra £11 per month fee for multi room as I hardly ever watch tv in bed, does anyone know if a freeview box will work on the NTL cable feed???? Thanks

LEE73 - sorry mate, don;t think it will work - didn't in my last house.

Oh heck. So it CAN work?!!

Perhaps NTL started including the Freeview multiplex channels after I tried - it was 2years ago.

    Sounds worth a go...

Not sure what areas you live in But it does not work in the Cardiff NTL Zone
well it didn't the last time I tried and that was quite Recently.

If I put a Standard TV Ariel Connector on the End of My NTL Cable line and Plug it into the TV , I can still tune in the Terrestrial channels as Normal , But if I plug that into a Freeview Box I get NO Signal.

Possibly some areas Freeview is on the NTL line and some not.

One tip. Make sure that any Freeview box you buy has two Scart sockets...:-)

Could you explain why two is such a benefit for a technical thickie?

    Thanks,

    Peter.

  • Bought a Freeview box (Sagem) from TJ Hughes Department store in Newport for £20 in July. Stocks were limited and may be store dependant.
  • You do tend to get what you pay for with a freeview box. I bought a Sagem (can`t remember the number) and it only had one scart connection and no means of tuning into it from the TV, except using the scart lead. So you couldnt record from it. At least in the brief time I had it before it went back I lost patience, perhaps I missed something.

You did miss something - to record you would simply connect the single scart to the VCR and then from the VCR run a scart out or co axial aerial lead to your tv.

I got a TWF 'smart scart' from TJ Hughes in Bradford for £20 (same as the Bush item Tescos sell at £45). Worth checking there regularly as stock changes quickly. I got a Bush DAB radio for £29 there too.
