Salad leaves, am I doing it right?

Hi there,

Made a few salad leave plants and now I'm worried I've done it wrong as they are all floppy.. lol.. :o

See pics.. I have just replanted all the big ones, did I leave it too long? I just popped two of the newest ones into a big pot to give them more room.

Should I be feeding them?

How much sun are they getting on that windowsill ? ....I would move them outdoors.

They get a massive amount of sun.. I did have them in a propogator though?

The garden belongs to my landlady that lives downstairs :( lol - I don't have any outdoor space at all.. she said I could use her greenhouse, but I can't get to it without asking, and I'd like to do it myself :D

I put loads of seeds in the pot, just sprinkled them on. Mine look a bit crowded but grow well. We cut and eat them long before they get to the size of yours.

I started mine in April and by May i had leggy, cress like salad leaves and almost threw them after posting the pics on here and being told they looked like they had either failed or the salad leave seeds were infact not entirely salad leaves...now they are huge bushy pots giving us salad everyday all day if we wished :)

IMO it looks as if you only used very few seeds in the pot, could this be the case?.

I just used 1 seed per pod in the propogator.. ooops!

I did look at them and thought they looked ready, but was expecting one huge bush of a plant lol.

I'm going to try them tomorrow :) they have been growing about 2.5 weeks now.

Thanks for the replies.. I'll plant more seeds in the same pot from now on!

    Can't you get them outside?

You need to put a pinch of seed in each pot at the very least, and as soon as you can start picking them.

Not got a garden unfortunately, just the windowsill.. although they do get a massive amount of light :)

Right, I'm going to put more in the pots from now on :)

  • It's not too late to start again GEEGEE8. I sow my salad leaf seeds generously in some oblong containers the garden centre was giving away! I sowed some more about 2 weeks ago and already they are about an inch high. The containers are packed with them. Another week and I can be picking some baby leaves to eat, thus giving the others a bit more room to grow.
