Normal current accounts that don't need a minimum balance?

As per thread title really, I was wondering if anyone can recommend a High St bank account (not bothered about overdraft or cheque book) that offers a Visa debit card (not Electron!) and doesn't need a minimum monthly balance/salary (I'm self employed so I don't have a fixed monthly income as such!).

Cheers.

All banks and building societies will have current accounts where you don't have to have a minimum monthly balance that give you cheque books and debit cards (I have 3 with different institutions).

The banks won't tell you about them because they make money for either charging a monthly account fee or as a penalty for not putting a minimum amount in. In the case of building societies current accounts are often hard to open unless you have also have a savings account with them.

I suggest you go into the bank or a building society you are already with preferably not the one you have a business account with if you are a sole trader, and ask for a the particular current account you want. You need to be persistent and firm but polite, take down the name of the person you are talking to and not be afraid of reporting them higher up in the bank or even further.
    I'm not cynical I'm realistic :p
