Manure for allotment

Just finished digging our new allotment over, getting rid of weeds etc. I was wanting to put some manure on but just don't know how to go about getting some. I travel alot around country lanes etc but never see any for sale. Was wondering what you other allotment holders do to get yours. Looking forward to your replies

I would check with some of your fellow allotments neighbours. Someone on our site orders for everyone else, leaves gates open and pays. The farmer then does lots of trips in one day and it does save everyone having to be there to open gates etc.
If you have a trailer and will be picking it up I would look for riding stables as these usually have plenty going and it is often free. Make sure it is well rotted or you can just leave it for a few months on your site.

Well I wish you were near me!! I have a rather large heap I need to get rid off and I contacted my local allotments who said ohh yes please but I've not heard from them since! I've agreed to load it onto our trailer and delivery it but still no joy!

Running out of room to put anymore - and unfortuantly I get a barrow load a day!!

Is there anyone around the lanes that just has one or two horses out in fields by their house? I'm sure they'd be glad ot get rid of it - like I am!!

Before you acquire the manure you do need to establish that it does not contain a herbicide which affects vegetables. It's aminopyralid, another one similar is called clopyralid. Check that the horses haven't grazed on grass treated with it, and that the manure doesn't contain bedding which comes from treated grass either.
  • Look round for a local riding stables - they supply our allotments with stacks and stacks of manure

No sorry - we are in East Kent - So a bit far for delivery!!

My boys are both out 24/7 so no bedding and the land has never been treated with non organic products, neither has the hay I get - it comes from an organic farmer.

    Shame.

I would be surprised if you had to pay for it.

On our allotments, we get horse muck delivered to us free. There's more to be had if you have a trailer to pick it up with - just find your local stables/riding school.

If you have local farmers, they will probably be glad for you to have some, although you may well have to collect it and it may only be in the summer months. This is particularly the case if they are in a Nitrate Vulnerable Zone (NFZ) which I think is about two thirds of agricultural land, as some rules known as the Nitrate Pollution Prevention Regulations 2008 covering the sortage of organic manures have come into force over the last year requiring them to provide at least 6 months (1 October to 1 April inclusive) storage capacity for pig slurry and poultry manure and 5 months (1 October to 1 March inclusive) storage capacity for other livestock slurry eg. cattle slurry. They may well produce more manure than they can store and spread, and be glad of somewhere they can "export" it to, rather than paying to expand their storage.
