August 2010 Grocery Challenge

Hello folks
Went to MrT today and bought loads more fruit and veg. All very well being on a healthy eating lark but it is more costly. Anyway, that was another£16.59. Got 2 bags of reduced pears. Also noticed that there were a few different bags of Market Value apples so the ones I bought were Jonagold which are usually quite expensive.
Think I might struggle with this month's challenge as I have both DSS and one's girlfriend coming for hols. Although I had planned an increase to accommodate this, I hadn't banked on the spendy fruit and veg. And although we've cut out any weekday alcohol that doesn't help as the wine doesn't come out of the grocery budget:p.
Good luck all.

Did my food shop today and spent £23.30 - which was well under budget!! I had allocated £30 for the week, so I will keep over the change so that I can get milk and any other extras throughout the week. I always get my milk from the corner shop as it's much cheaper than the big supermarkets (I get it for 99p rather than £1.53)
Hope everyone's had a good day!

I got a dinner in M&S tonight, but they were out of the dine on offers. I have chicken for tomorrow night, and mince for Tursday out of the freezer, and I will get some veggies from the plot tomorrow I hope. I think I will have a low spend week, but I have a lot of strange things to use up from freezer as well.GC 2010 €6,000/ €5,897

Evening everyone.
Am new to this thread, a lovely person on DFW board reccomended I try this as need to cut back on spending. I have no idea really how much I do spend on groceries each month so have started a spending diary. Could I please be added to your challenge list. I will have to guestimate for the month, will keep all receipts and log in spending diary.
Could I be put down for £200 please.
Darn, now have go and try and put this in my sig!0 -
Hi All,
Just checking in with a big smile!
Not only y2dy when i went to drop something off at the rents did dad give me a pork chop as he had defrosted too many, mum gave me a bag of roastie tata's and a jar of home made pickles eggsso as i already had gammon defrosted from sat, i was going to have the pork chop tonight, but this eve as my car started making an awful noise i took it up to dad where i was made a scrummy BLT sandwich and fruity toast as it was taking dad longer to sort my car out.. so that pork chop is for 2m!! got some steamed veg in the fridge from last night and gravy (anyone know an easy gravy recipe using stock cubes??) also got given some dwarf beans from the maintenance man at work... so i'm getting things for nothing! yay! 3 NSD's in a row and don't need anything else either so hopefully will make it thru til the weekend - if not further.
Keep Smiling

4 days in and my grocery money is still intact! And if I even think about spending all I have to do is open the freezer and look at the years supply of food I have in there. I'm feeling optimistic.
Had some yummy home grown snow peas for lunch yesterday. Until then I hadn't known they were supposed to be so crispy, ready to explode with the slightest bit of pressure. It's amazing what supermarkets have gotten us used to, isn't it? There's nothing like having food off the vine and onto the plate within 5 minutes. I also had a big bowl of strawberries, again, picked and eaten straight away. I'm a strawberry snob, my family has always grown them so when I see people sighing over the "lovely fresh strawberries" they buy I have to try not to laugh. They're tasteless. I'll stick to my real fresh strawberries, even if I can only get them for a couple of months a year!0 -

I use small amount of meat juices (or veg oil), plain flour and oxo cube.
Mix these together then add a small amount of water from boiling veg.
Put onto heat stirring whilst adding more veg water to desired consistency and bring to boil.
Real gravy and much better than watery granule gravy. Does take some practice though.0 -
I am streeetching out my left over cash from my July food purse as I am off on my holiday on the 13th for a fortnight so August hopefully will be a very inexpensive month for me.0
