Assuming the Port Number you have hidden is 25 then this is set correctly.

Can you ping smtp.ntlworld.com? Click Start>Run>Type cmd>Click OK>Type ping smtp.ntlworld.com> Were all 4 sent and received?

Have you changed your Anti-Virus recently as sometimes this causes an issue whilst scanning mail?

Is your Firewall blocking Port 25?
  • I'm no techie but have your reached you capacity, I've had this problem with NTL before and found that if I delete some emails then it works.

    or try

Also if you have norton firewall, try switching it off then see if your emails work then switch it back on again. I know this is naughty but sometimes it happens to me and this is what 'good-old-NTL' advise.

how come nothing is free yet? :rotfl:
  • It wasn't 25, it was something like 76 and two other digits but I can't remember them. Wasn't sure if I could post the port number as I didn't know if it meant someone could hack my email account.

The port number should be 25 for standard SMTP mail.

Check in your account settings in your mail program.

    For Outlook Express: Tools>Accounts>Properties>Advanced>SMTP

By the way, no one can hack your account by you revealing the port number.
  • It is port 25, the port in the error message is 7362. Thanks

Try turning off outgoing mail scanning in your Anti Virus program and see if this works.

try start>run>cmd (enter) then type telnet smtp.ntlworld.com 25

If you get a blank screen or a welcome to whatever, nothing is blocking port 25 (mail) so it would be a mail client issue...(unless symantec has blocked your mail client)
A fine is a tax for doing wrong. A tax is a fine for doing well.
  • Hi,

I have just done what you suggested and I got this message:

    220 ESMTP server ready
  • Also, I'm using AVG and I've turned off the outgoing mail scan but it's made no difference. There is something I've spotted and wondered if it meant anything. In the AVG settings > Email Scanner > Properties > server tab the POP3 is active but the SMTP* says it's disabled.
  • All fixed now. My mum account is attached to mine and I just checked her settings and her port was set to 25 and she can send mail. So, I went into my settings (tools>accounts > properties) and mine was on 7362 so I changed it to 25 and it'd working. The thing is I've never changed the port number before so how did that happen?
