Trampolines!

I read today of another tree house being ordered to be taken down cant remember which paper. It was to do with the height. My argument I have a 12ft trampoline on both sides of my garden. These are raised 2-3ft off the ground already then the children are bouncing even higher. We have no privacy whatsoever when we are in the garden, and the noise!!!The girls are the worse in my opinion the shreiking and screaming(yes I do have boys and girls)Whats the difference? These things just seem to give the parents babysitters for hours on end, there is no supervision and we have to put up with the endless shreiking sometimes for hours on end. What do other people think?

I know it must be frustrating, especially if you want to sit down and enjoy your garden. But, unless you approach the neighbours and come to a compromise about the noise (IE, no children on the trampoline after 7pm or something like that) they genuinely probably aren't going to realise that there is a problem.
I think that kids should be allowed to have fun in their own garden in the same way you want peace and tranquility in yours. It doesnt sound to me that they are being antisocial (as I'm assuming they aren't jumping just to watch you in your garden?)

Because by then you've blown your chances. That's it."0 -
i have a 10ft trampoline in my garden and neighbours both sides, we told them we would be getting it and we have never had a problem with them yes they make noise they are enjoying themselves and i would much rather them be on the trampoline having fun and getting excercise than plonked in front of the tv or computer. i dont think you have much of a case here if it is in their garden then physically they are not doing you any harm, the only thing i can suggest is you bring it up with your neighbour and ask them to maybe keep the noise down a little.:xmastree:Is loving life right now,yes I am a soppy fool who believes in the simple things in life :xmastree:0

I agree LJM.
OP, we have 6ft fences & the kids can't see over when jumping (good fences makes good neighbours!!), I don't constantly supervise them in the garden, I consider it a safe extension of our home. They do make noise, not just necessarily on the trampoline, but I do keep their noise levels in check to a degree, to be considerate to the neighbours and for my own sanity!!
I understand your frustration we had some very noisey full on neighbours a few years back and at time felt I didn't want to even step out the back door. Not sure what to suggest really though other than speaking to your neighbours.:hello:0 -
Our neighbours over the back of our house (they are in a different street to us so we don't actually know them but their garden backs onto the side of ours if that makes sense!) have a huge trampoline in their garden and when the kids are on it, their heads are above the fence, even though we have high fences.
When I'm sunbathing (topless!) in my garden it does sometimes feel a bit awkward but then I think I have as much right to relax in my garden as they do to play in theirs (no houses over look our garden so apart from the trampoline, our garden is completely private!)
The shrieking does sometimes go right through me though (I don't have children and don't know anyone with small children so am not used to the amount of noise they make haha!!) and it drives one of my dogs mad! I worry because when he hears the children, he starts barking and I panic that someone is going to complain about his barking!!0 -
Though I mentioned the 'noise' my real issue is privacy.I have three children myself who play basketball but are not constantly peering over the fence.I am only allowed a 6ft fence but my privacy whether sunbathing or whatever is constantly invaded.Children or not they do peer over and make comments even commenting on what we were having for dinner one evening,we were sat eating!0

mine have a trampoline but its only 6ft so at the moment there is no way they could see over next doors fence. My kids are quite noisey when they are playing out on it, not so much shreiking but DD laugh is really loud. It goes right through me so I do sympathise with my neighbours but they live where there are children. These houses were designed to have children in, the gardens are lovely, square, flat, large and enclosed - ideal. Luckily my neighbours on one side have a little boy who went to preschool with DD so get on quite well with them and as many of their toys fly over into our garden as ours do into theirs. They have a larger trampoline and we will probably get one too when the kids outgrow the little one because it is great exercise and great fun for them. I'll probably try to keep it near the neighbours with kids fence though rather than the other side.
Incidently I can see alot more of next doors garden when I'm watching the kids out the upstairs window whilst putting the washing away then I think anyone would get a glimpse of from bouncing on a trampoline. If their kids are commenting on what they see then they are just rude and thats up to the parents to do something about. Sometimes mine say things without realising its rude and I explain to them why they don't say those things.
Oh yeah and would it be possible to grow something up the fence to give you a little bit more privacy.0 -
Our Homebase has some very tall bamboo plants on offer at the moment. They'll get tall enough to give you some privacy.
You can't put up a fence higher than 2m but you can put up a pole and wire arrangement and grow fast-growing climbers up it. That would screen the trampolines off.0 -
Just a thought, when I lived in America most of the trampolines were dug into the ground. This serves two purposes, on one hand it is safer if the children fall off it, and on the other it reduces the hight that the children can view over. It's a shame that the brits aren't digging the trampolines in too. I personally don't like them at all. They are still dangerous, even with spring covers and a barrier around them. I know a little girl whose foot went through the spring cover & was totally shredded, the bones were shattered too, not at all nice.0
