How to get DVLA to update model of import on V5?
Hi all,
I am in the process of insuring my dads car for him and in going through the paperwork I spotted some missing and wrong info on the V5.
We always thought it was a Yaris and my dad insured it as such. It was imported here from Japan in 2006 and first registered there in 1999. The V5 just says Toyota, no model and 98cc when it should say 997cc. It has had its SVA and we get reminders for the tax etc. It says Yaris on the back and on its MOTs. However the insurance companies do not recognise it as such. The reg number does not show up on their systems.
On further research I think it may be a Toyota Vitz and someone just stuck a Yaris badge on it! Surely this should have been dealt with on its SVA!?!
How can I get the errors on the V5 put right and the real model name inserted? Is putting it through another SVA an option?
I want to do it properly so that we are honest with the insurance companies and not lie like my dad has for 4 years!
Cheers for any help. Si

You could stick a porsche 911 badge on it if you want. Will not make any difference to them.
As long as it passes their criteria Lights, Brakes etc...
Still treated as an import when you insure it and priced on that.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
I would leave it as it is, their fault (DVLA) not yours, simple0

You're doing better than me. V6 is just listed as 'other' under model on the reg books.....0

Tried to do this before.
Good luck.
DVLA wont listen to a punter.
They wanted a report from the original manufacturer to state what the car was model, engine, etc.
Without this they were unwilling to entertain.0 -
The Vitz and Yaris are the same car . It depends on the market there is also a Toyota Echo they are the same car just differant names for each market . As it was imported from Japan then it will be a Vitz . Have you told your insurance its a import ? .0

Thank you all for taking the time to reply.
I have informed the insurance company and the price is £198-00 more as its an import!!
Cheers stef73, after more digging on the interweb I have found out that they are indeed all the same car, just differing spec.
I am thinking of the future with possible problems selling it on with the missing and wrong info on the V5.
Is there any way to get the car examined by someone eg re-SVA to properly establish the info so that I can update the V5 with the DVLA.
Cheers for all your help. Si0 -
No matter whet you do it will always be a grey import and thus subject to the insurers charging you more for it because tehy have an excuse they can use to do so.
If you can insure it now, I'd advise you to stop spending money on the V5. It's not that important.
A few people I know of have their imports down as bikes on the V5 when they are quite clearly cars.
It's never caused them any problems with insurance or plod, yet still the DVLA wont listen to them!!

I'm ex DVLA and it was very rare for any import to be registered with a model type showing on the V5. The computer wasn't able to register them if the model type was not UK recognised.
I agree with housesitter that there is no need for you to spend money on fixing this as it won't affect anything.

Thank you all very much for your advice.
I will not spend any money trying to convince the DVLA!!! Good to have an insiders view!
The car is all paid up and insured as the Vitz it really is, still says Yaris on the back though! They still had a hard time locating it on their system.
Just out of interest, as my dad has had it insured as a Yaris GLS for the past 4 years, what would of happened in the event of a claim? Could the insurance company have declined the claim?
All the best Si0
