Train or car from Worthing to Guildford?

Hi all,
In October I will be travelling from Worthing to Guildford most likely for 3 days a week, and I am trying to find out what the roads are like on this journey at peak times.
Does anyone out there know this? The best route I can find relies on part A24 and then a lot of B roads, and takes from door to Surrey uni car park 1hr 10mins, on a clear run.
The faster trains take 1hr 47 mins, but with added walking either side to and from train stations takes an additional 30 minutes.
I also have children who will have to be minded for if I need to be in for 9am and of course after school too.
Problem is I don't have a timetable as yet, so am unsure of the hours I need to be in for, but trying to suss it out now. Any help will be glady appreciated!
