Pet Free and Smoke Free Houses

I often see PET FREE AND SMOKE FREE ENVIRONMENT on ebay listings and wonder if this really makes a difference to sales. We don't smoke but I never mention that fact.
I keep promising myself that one day (when I have a right huff on) that I will state THIS ITEM COMES FROM A HOUSE THAT IS FULL OF ANIMALS AND EVERYONE CHAIN SMOKES!

i know i wont buy anything that doesnt state that its a pet free home due to the fact my partner is allergic to those pets of a fluffy, furry or feathery variety - much to my kids dissappointment lol.
If it doesnt state it i dont buy it.
Though i do know someone (who smokes heavily) who sells new childrens clothes and always states in her listing from a smoke free home i wonder why she bothers her feedback speaks volumes with the 'stinks of smoke' comments left.
So im guessing it does make a difference. The Only Thing Men Can Do Right Is Get Everything Wrong

it doesn't really bother me if it doens't state it, as stated in post above, a lot of ppl put it to try and get more bids but you can tell it is not true. whatever I buy from ebay goes straight from wrapping to washing machine anyway, so to be honest I'm not too bothered -0

I listed a book on Amazon stating that it whiffed off nicotine (got it from a charity shop) and it sold, probably to a smoker - it was dead cheap though!Grocery Challenge £139/240 until 31/01

I always list that we are a smoke free home - I have no aversion to smokers - hubby used to smoke, but I know 'some' people are particular about this. We have several pets though - so I can't put this down.
I don't think it gets me any more bids - but put it anyway - just in case!"A simple life freely chosen is a source of strength. Do not be pursuaded into buying what you do not need or cannot afford." Quaker Faith & Practice 1.02.410 -

Even as i am a smoker it is nice to see, especially for clothing. If i was to buy a top for instance and two identical items were up - one with the phrase one without i wouldnt even think about which one to bid on.0 -
i would suggest that it seriously depends on what your buying and selling, if your buying second hand cloths then yes i can see that items smelling of smoke or pets could be a little offensive, however, if your looking for a power tool or a car stereo who would really care?
i would suggest that if the item is stating non smoker no pets etc etc, then great what a bonus, but it doesnt really enhance a sellers listing specifically, if the punter wants it they will buy it.0 -
I once bought a book from ebay and when it arrived it absolutely reeked of stale cigarette smoke. So, yes I would prefer stuff to be from smoke-free homes. I tried everything to get the smell out and nothing worked. Yuk! I put the smoke/pet-free home thing on my auctions. I sometimes sell fabric/yarn I always put that on the auction page. If I don't people email to ask. Face it, no one would want to receive knitting wool that stinks of fags.0

Yes it definately does make a difference. Both my DD2 and DH have asthma. They are both allergic to animals and smoke. I hate smelling smoke on any items as it is so hard to ged rid of.When life gives you a hundred reasons to cry, show life that you have a thousand reasons to smile

I think a lot of it depends on the item. If it's secondhand machine-washable clothes I don't imagine most customers would be too bothered, but if they're sold as brand new and/or have to be handwashed or dry cleaned, it might make a big difference. I think the smoke issue is most important in the case of books, which obviously can't be washed, and smells do tend to stick to them.
I have a smoker and 2 cats in my house, but that's not hugely relevant since most things I sell on eBay were secondhand when I bought them anyway, and I have no idea of their history. Obviously I don't mention smoke and pets in my ads, and I've never had anyone ask yet. I do make an effort to keep my eBay items in a smoke and pet free place in my house.0 -
I keep a good deal of what I sell in my 17 year old's bedroom. He doesn't smoke but his socks don't half hum. I never mention that though. LOL0
