0870 numbers

A particular company advertise an 0870 number on all their headed notepaper. When you call that number a recorded message directs you to call an 0845 number, where you eventually manage to speak to a person. I have been receiving letters from this company for a long time now, and they haven't let their customers know about the 0845 number. Basically, everybody is channelled through the 0870 route first, which presumably earns the company money. Can anybody tell me whether this is unlawful? Or who I could complain to about this? I feel that they should make the free number available and that this is a covert way of raising money.

Welcome to the MSE forums Slade.
Revenue sharing on 0870 numbers is no longer permitted so they're not making money as you suggest.
They're probably just saving money by using up old stationery.Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0 -
